Established in 2000 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, this esteemed scholarship programme offers 80 full-cost scholarships to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK.
Each year, approximately two-thirds of these awards are offered to PhD students, with the remaining awards available for Master’s and other postgraduate courses.
What does the scholarship cover?
- Full cost of studying at Cambridge
- Additional discretionary funding for:
- Academic development
- Dependent children
- Fieldwork
- Maternity/Paternity leave
- Hardship
Who is eligible?
- Citizens of any country outside the United Kingdom
- Applying for a PhD, MLitt, or one-year postgraduate course at the University of Cambridge

How to apply for Cambridge Scholarship Programme 2025/2026
- Submit your application for admission and funding via the University’s Graduate Application Portal at www.gatescambridge.org/apply/how-to-apply/
- Complete the section to apply for admission to a course and a College place
- Complete the Gates Cambridge part of the funding section
Deadlines:
- US citizens resident in the USA: Wednesday, 16 October 2024
- All other eligible applicants: Dependent on your course – either 3 December 2024 or 7 January 2025
