ASUU to Embark on Strike Over Campus Violence

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Benin branch, has threatened to commence a strike action starting Monday, 28 April 2024.

This decision comes in response to the increasing incidents of violence and insecurity on the university’s Ugbowo campus.

In a statement signed by Ray Chikogu and Success Abusomwan, Chairman and Secretary of the Union, respectively, ASUU strongly condemned the “rebellious and terrorising acts of brigandage” perpetrated by students, both individually and under the guise of student unionism.

The Union notably referenced an incident involving an attack on one of its members, Dr. Presley Osemwengie, on 12th April 2024.

Expressing grave concern over the safety of lecturers and management staff, ASUU warned that it may resort to industrial action unless immediate measures are taken to address the escalating violence.
