About the Abia State University (ABSU)

Abia State University (ABSU) has a rich history of milestones since establishment. In 1981, the university was founded as Imo State University, Etiti by Governor Sam Mbakwe of the then Imo State. The main campus was in Etiti while the Law Department was in Aba. Between 1984 and 1985, under the military governorship of General Ike Nwachukwu, the university moved to its permanent site in Uturu, Okigwe. When Abia State was created in 1991, the Uturu campus was ceded to Abia State and was renamed Abia State University, Uturu.

Over the years, ABSU has expanded its programmes and infrastructure. In 2007, the university launched its E-library which was inaugurated by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on July 3rd to enhance teaching and research for students and staff.

Leadership has also played a crucial role in the university’s growth. On December 1, 2020, Professor Onyemachi M. Ogbulu took office as the Vice-Chancellor and has since focused on academic excellence and infrastructural development.

Recently, ABSU made a significant success in the October/November 2023 NUC accreditation exercise, got full accreditation for all 19 programmes presented which includes four postgraduate and fifteen undergraduate programmes. This is a testament to the university’s commitment to academic standards.

As of March 2025, ABSU will resume academic activities for 2024/2025 session. The campus will reopen on March 26, 2025, fresh students are expected on April 4 and returning students on April 6. Registration is from April 9 to April 12 and lectures start on April 16, 2025. Students are advised to make their payments and course registrations on time to access university facilities.

Throughout its existence, Abia State University has been committed to quality education and academic excellence, evolving to meet the needs of its community.
