Students of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) have taken to the streets to protest the prolonged blackout on campus, which has left them without electricity and water for over six (6) days.
The protesters, comprising hostel students from Halls 4, 5, and 6, converged on the main entrance of the university, chanting “We need light and water in the hostel.
The peaceful protest, which began in the early hours of July 2, 2024, has resulted in the closure of the university’s main gate, preventing students, lecturers, and non-academic staff from entering the campus.
The protesters have vowed to continue their demonstration until the issue is addressed by the university authorities.
The students are demanding a prompt restoration of electricity and water supply to the hostels, which have been without these essential services for an extended period.
The protest has also drawn attention to the deplorable state of infrastructure in the university, with many calling for urgent attention to the issue.
The university authorities have yet to comment on the situation, but the students remain resolute in their demands.
The protest has been peaceful, with no reports of violence or destruction of property.
